Paws A While Shelter is a small independent dog rescue based in Alrewas, Staffordshire since 2022.
We’re Passionate About Dog Rescue.
Our team of volunteers have experience in kennel management and dog behaviour which spans over 25 years. We are passionate about dog welfare and our mission is to rescue dogs who have nowhere else to go. Our focus is also to rehabilitate with our ultimate goal being to re-home dogs from across the UK.
Helping dogs find their forever homes
Our purpose is to give a second chance to dogs finding themselves in need of care and to find them loving, forever homes. We have several dogs in our care at the moment who are excited to meet you. Please note, in person meetings or ‘meet and greets’ are by appointment only.
Rehoming A Rescue Dog
When considering adopting a rescue dog, it is important to understand the 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months rule. This a rule intended to guide you through the adjustment period of a new dog after adoption. However, please note that this is an ‘in-general’ sort of rule. Every dog is unique and will adjust differently.
3 Days to Decompress
- Your newly adopted rescue dog might feel overwhelmed, scared, and unsure of what is going on and not comfortable to be themselves.
- They may not want food or water, or to even go to the toilet.
- Set your boundaries early, stay calm, and give clear direction.
- Give them space, let them settle into their new environment, and do not force interaction.
- They may likely test the boundaries and act out.
3 Weeks to Understand Routine
- Your rescue dog will now be starting to settle and be in a routine in their new home.
- They will feel more comfortable and at home, have figured out their new environment.
- They will have started to let their guard down and may be showing some of their personality.
- Behavioural issues may start to arise, such as barking, guarding, destructiveness, or separation anxiety.
- Please seek behavioural/training advise to help. Also, please let us know if any issues do arise as we want to ensure the best for any dog adopted from us.
- Remember, they just need time and patience but praise every success.
3 Months to Feel Truly at Home
- Your rescue dog will now feel more relaxed and comfortable.
- They will understand that you are not a threat and want more attention from you.
- Trust and bonds will have been built.
- They will feel safe with you.
- Your rescue dog now has a routine and enjoys being in a family/home environment.
Rehome Your Dog
It’s never an easy decision to rehome your dog. However, if this has become a necessary step, get in touch with us first to see if we have a suitable place for your dog. At Paws A While Shelter, we endeavour to do everything possible to find our dogs loving forever homes.

Where to find us
We are just off the A38 between Lichfield and Burton on Trent.
Take the A513 at Alrewas towards Tamworth. Following the signs for the National Memorial Arboretum (Croxall Road), drive past the Arboretum. You will then go over the level crossing where you will reach a dead end. From there, just follow the signs for PAWS on the right.
